AGTC to Increase Golf Tourism in the Kingdom

The 6th Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) organized by the International Organization of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) took place on the Danang Golf Coast, Vietnam’s premier golf destination, from 7-13 May 2017. Established in 2012 by the IAGTO, AGTC is a three-day members-only event designed to give golf tour operators from around the globe the opportunity to meet with golf courses and resorts, hotels, receptive operators, airlines and tourist boards from golf destinations across the entire Asia Pacific region.

Among a total of 600 delegates who attended AGTC 2017 were a record 220 golf tour operators from 36 countries. Cambodia was represented by Angkor Golf Resort, Phokeethra Country Club and PSD Travel who are all making the effort to promote the Kingdom as a favorite golfing destination.

“The AGTC is a fantastic platform to raise awareness of golf tourism in Cambodia. It also gives us the chance to meet and network with new and existing partners on a face-to-face basis.” David Baron,  Director of Golf at Angkor Golf Resort said.

Fabrice Ho, Golf Operations Manager at Phokeethra Country Club, told us that “Phokeethra Country Club has been a participant every year because AGTC is simply the best way to promote a beautiful golf destination such as Siem Reap and meeting people from all around the world.”

At the convention, the sellers have the opportunity to meet with the buyers during a morning session to set appointments. The following afternoon and full day after, the tables are turned which the sellers are stationed at their stands to meet with the buyers from around the world that have made appointments beforehand.

When asked about this year’s experience, Fabrice said “I believe that this year was a pretty good one. We are going to sign a bit more than 50 new travel agent contracts. A lot of interest from new countries who want to find a new destination, with golf courses less than 30 minutes away from any hotel and a city with great restaurants, night life and cultural discovery .

The AGTC is followed with a FAM Trip to explore the host destination and from what we have witnessed (see the article on page…), Da Nang is a great spot. Being host to such an event has massively increased its reputation in the golf travel industry and will see a fruitful increase in the number of golfers from around the world visiting the Danang Golf coast .

Regarding expectations from the event for the Cambodian representatives, David told us that “with over 60 pre-scheduled appointments, we are almost guaranteed to generate new business, whilst maintaining other valuable partnerships. We have lots of exciting initiatives in place which will hopefully drive more traffic to Siem Reap in the coming months and years. We expect to see growth from Chinese, Australian and European travelers over the next few seasons.”

The IAGTO organized AGTC is the perfect place to promote Cambodia as a golfing destination that will help to increase awareness and growth in the industry. Hopefully soon, we will see Cambodia being host to such event which will surely boost not only golf tourism, but the whole tourism industry in the country as a whole and set Cambodia on the map of every golf tour operators and golf travelers around the globe.

“PSD Travel and IAGTO chief editor has approached the Ministry of Tourism in Cambodia to get their participation in next year’s AGTC which will take place in Manila, Philippines. We will continue to make Cambodia visible in the ASEAN golf tourism map and we hope to see more golf courses joining the event next year.” said Candra Tanpatti, General Manager of PSD Travel.
