Phokeethra Country Club organized the Fire & Ice Season Opening Tournament on October 31 to signal the start of the new golfing season in Cambodia. The event, originally set in early October, was postponed due to extreme heavy rain on the course during the night before the event. Though it was the first event in quite a while from Phokeethra, it was well worth the wait.
Phokeethra Country Club was chosen as second best course in Cambodia at the Asian Golf Awards 2015, so it was just as you’d expect it to be, the course was in excellent condition. The well sponsored inaugural event counted 32 players and had a good mix of Cambodian and expat players. Upon arrival, a filled up goody bag was given out to all the players and after a bit of warming up and catching up with familiar faces on the course, it was time to go to get started. The shot gun start was at a warm 1pm afternoon but the free-flow of Heineken beer during the round was a welcoming refreshment.
Phokeethra really went out of their way to make it a fantastic day for everyone. The presentation dinner was loaded with sponsored lucky draws and generous prizes for the tournament winners.
The dinner boasted a fiery BBQ and icy desserts with the choice of ice cold beer from Heineken or wine provided by CelliersD’Asie. Everyone enjoyed their food and drink while live music from the Filipino trio set an energetic vibe for the evening which had everyone in good spirits.
Cambodia`s leading golfer Ly Hong (Overall Best Gross), Im Reahul (Men Best Net), Mr. Nek Keo (Senior Best Net) and Tevy Sareoun (Ladies Best Nett) walked away with prizes sponsored by Homna, Titleist/Footjoy, Heineken, along with elegantly designed trophies. The evening came to an end with the lucky draw where most other players won something to take home for the day. Prizes for the lucky draw included several nights stay at Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, a Docus putter and a very generous prize from PSD Travel with a 3 nights stay with golf in Malaysia.
Let`s hope it won`t take long to the next event at Phokeethra as we had a very, very joyful time during the Fire & Ice Season Opening event. “This event is the building block for us to grow the core group of local golfers here in Siem Reap. Putting on a good show is not only fun but also what will keep bringing the players back. We already have many ideas and look forward to organizing other exciting events”, concluded Robert Turvey, the Golf Operations Manager of Phokeethra Country Club.
