On January 27 at Garden City Golf Club, Cambodia Brewery Limited (CBL) organized the inaugural Heineken Golf Championship. Ever since the acquisition of the Heineken Brand, CBL has been actively trying to reconnect with its consumers, with golf being one of the platforms.

Though the Heineken Golf Championship took place on a Wednesday afternoon, there was high attendance which goes to show the support that Heineken as a brand and CBL as a company has garnered.

A well stuffed goodie bag was handed out to each golfer upon registration. Everyone received a custom made Heineken golf shirt, golf cap, golf balls, arm cooling sleeves and an umbrella. After changing into our Heineken golf battle attire then heading up to the hotel to have lunch, we were ready to begin

The competition format was a Scramble for teams of two. When the clock hit 1pm, got on their buggies, got acquainted with one another and headed off to our designated starting hole. Even though the weather was a bit warm, the gears provided in the goodie bag, especially the umbrella, really saved us from the heat of the day and the plentiful ice cold Heineken beer that was found everywhere on the course kept us refreshed throughout the round.

The after party took place at the Raffles Hotel Le Royal with great food to keep the hungry golfers well fed, a live band playing tasteful music to keep everyone entertained and of course, more ice cold Heineken to keep the mood lively. After a great speech from the Managing Director of CBL, Roland Bala, we were ready to begin the prize presentation.

The team of Alan Martin from Angkor Golf Resort and Colonel Jaafar (yes he won a big prize again) from the Malaysian Embassy picked up the first place trophy and prizes. Coming in second place, the newly appointed GOM of Phokeethra Country Club, Fabrice Ho and Grant Knuckey, followed by the Khmer duo of Ly Kea and Sok Sothyra.

“Heineken has been in the social networking business for 150 years already. When we took over the Heineken brand last year, it was to connect  back with all the consumers in whatever ways we can. Whether it is through golf, events or whatever. I am very happy to put Heineken in the front of golf here in Cambodia.” said Roland Bala.”The plan for the future is very simple. When you think of golf, you think of Heineken” he added.

Cheers to the team of CBL and the people involved with organizing the event for a job well done. It was definitely a fun experience and we are anxiously looking forward to the next one.
